    Environmental monitoring platform based on a heterogeneous wireless sensor network

    Abstract – In museums, to conserve the existing artwork is a vital issue. To achieve this purpose, it is fundamental to monitor its environment, either in storage or exhibition rooms. The deployment of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) can help to implement these measurements continuously, in a real-time basis, and in a much easier and cheaper way than when using traditional measuring equipments and procedures. This is the main objective of the WISE-MUSE project, which uses WSNs for monitoring and automatically controlling museums’ environment and structural health. In this paper, the implementation and the final results of the WISE-MUSE project, which was carried out in two particular museums located in Madeira Island, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Funchal and the Madeira Whale Museum, are described. Among other important contributions, we emphasize the development of new environmental monitoring and controlling devices, an emergency doors’ controlling device, as well as the development of three new tools for monitoring, visualizing and managing WSNs, which bring some considerable advantages when compared with other commercially available solutions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Association between adiposity indicators, metabolic parameters and inflammatory markers in a sample of female adolescents

    The aim of this study was to investigate the association between total and abdominal adiposity with metabolic parameters and inflammatory markers, in female adolescents. The sample consisted of 53 adolescents aged 13 to 17 years from a public school in Curitiba, Brazil. The adiposity indicators studied were body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), trunk fat mass (TKFM), total fat mass (TFM) and body fat percentage (BF%) measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The metabolic and inflammatory parameters studied were systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), glucose, insulin, homeostasis model assessment index for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), lipids, C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), leptin, adiponectin and resistin. Eighty percent of WC variation, 87% of TKFM and TFM, and 73% of BF% were predicted by BMI variation. There was a significant positive correlation between all indicators of adiposity with SBP, DBP, insulin, HOMA-IR, CRP and leptin. Triglycerides were positively correlated with BMI and WC, and adiponectin correlated negatively with BMI. TNF-α, IL-6, glucose, total cholesterol, and high- and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol did not correlate to the studied variables. BMI showed a significant association with most of the parameters studied, and WC was slightly better than BMI to predict insulin resistance in this specific population.59432533

    Mortality from gastrointestinal congenital anomalies at 264 hospitals in 74 low-income, middle-income, and high-income countries: a multicentre, international, prospective cohort study

    Summary Background Congenital anomalies are the fifth leading cause of mortality in children younger than 5 years globally. Many gastrointestinal congenital anomalies are fatal without timely access to neonatal surgical care, but few studies have been done on these conditions in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). We compared outcomes of the seven most common gastrointestinal congenital anomalies in low-income, middle-income, and high-income countries globally, and identified factors associated with mortality. Methods We did a multicentre, international prospective cohort study of patients younger than 16 years, presenting to hospital for the first time with oesophageal atresia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, intestinal atresia, gastroschisis, exomphalos, anorectal malformation, and Hirschsprung’s disease. Recruitment was of consecutive patients for a minimum of 1 month between October, 2018, and April, 2019. We collected data on patient demographics, clinical status, interventions, and outcomes using the REDCap platform. Patients were followed up for 30 days after primary intervention, or 30 days after admission if they did not receive an intervention. The primary outcome was all-cause, in-hospital mortality for all conditions combined and each condition individually, stratified by country income status. We did a complete case analysis. Findings We included 3849 patients with 3975 study conditions (560 with oesophageal atresia, 448 with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, 681 with intestinal atresia, 453 with gastroschisis, 325 with exomphalos, 991 with anorectal malformation, and 517 with Hirschsprung’s disease) from 264 hospitals (89 in high-income countries, 166 in middleincome countries, and nine in low-income countries) in 74 countries. Of the 3849 patients, 2231 (58·0%) were male. Median gestational age at birth was 38 weeks (IQR 36–39) and median bodyweight at presentation was 2·8 kg (2·3–3·3). Mortality among all patients was 37 (39·8%) of 93 in low-income countries, 583 (20·4%) of 2860 in middle-income countries, and 50 (5·6%) of 896 in high-income countries (p<0·0001 between all country income groups). Gastroschisis had the greatest difference in mortality between country income strata (nine [90·0%] of ten in lowincome countries, 97 [31·9%] of 304 in middle-income countries, and two [1·4%] of 139 in high-income countries; p≤0·0001 between all country income groups). Factors significantly associated with higher mortality for all patients combined included country income status (low-income vs high-income countries, risk ratio 2·78 [95% CI 1·88–4·11], p<0·0001; middle-income vs high-income countries, 2·11 [1·59–2·79], p<0·0001), sepsis at presentation (1·20 [1·04–1·40], p=0·016), higher American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score at primary intervention (ASA 4–5 vs ASA 1–2, 1·82 [1·40–2·35], p<0·0001; ASA 3 vs ASA 1–2, 1·58, [1·30–1·92], p<0·0001]), surgical safety checklist not used (1·39 [1·02–1·90], p=0·035), and ventilation or parenteral nutrition unavailable when needed (ventilation 1·96, [1·41–2·71], p=0·0001; parenteral nutrition 1·35, [1·05–1·74], p=0·018). Administration of parenteral nutrition (0·61, [0·47–0·79], p=0·0002) and use of a peripherally inserted central catheter (0·65 [0·50–0·86], p=0·0024) or percutaneous central line (0·69 [0·48–1·00], p=0·049) were associated with lower mortality. Interpretation Unacceptable differences in mortality exist for gastrointestinal congenital anomalies between lowincome, middle-income, and high-income countries. Improving access to quality neonatal surgical care in LMICs will be vital to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3.2 of ending preventable deaths in neonates and children younger than 5 years by 2030

    Discutindo a educação ambiental no cotidiano escolar: desenvolvimento de projetos na escola formação inicial e continuada de professores

    A presente pesquisa buscou discutir como a Educação Ambiental (EA) vem sendo trabalhada, no Ensino Fundamental e como os docentes desta escola compreendem e vem inserindo a EA no cotidiano escolar., em uma escola estadual do município de Tangará da Serra/MT, Brasil. Para tanto, realizou-se entrevistas com os professores que fazem parte de um projeto interdisciplinar de EA na escola pesquisada. Verificou-se que o projeto da escola não vem conseguindo alcançar os objetivos propostos por: desconhecimento do mesmo, pelos professores; formação deficiente dos professores, não entendimento da EA como processo de ensino-aprendizagem, falta de recursos didáticos, planejamento inadequado das atividades. A partir dessa constatação, procurou-se debater a impossibilidade de tratar do tema fora do trabalho interdisciplinar, bem como, e principalmente, a importância de um estudo mais aprofundado de EA, vinculando teoria e prática, tanto na formação docente, como em projetos escolares, a fim de fugir do tradicional vínculo “EA e ecologia, lixo e horta”.Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educació

    Silk Fibroin Hydrogels Incorporated with the Antioxidant Extract of Stryphnodendron adstringens Bark

    Barbatim&atilde;o (Stryphnodendron adstringens) is a Brazilian medicinal plant known for its pharmacological properties, including healing activity related to its phenolic composition, which is chiefly given by tannins. In order to preserve its stability and bioactivity, barbatim&atilde;o extracts can be incorporated into (bio-)polymeric matrixes, of which silk fibroin stands out due to its versatility and tunable properties. This work aimed to obtain barbatim&atilde;o bark extract rich in phenolic compounds and evaluate its incorporation in fibroin hydrogels. From the extraction process, it was observed that the PG (propylene glycol) extract presented a higher global yield (X0) and phenolic compounds (TPC) than the ET (ethanol) extract. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity (ORAC and FRAP) was similar between both extracts. Regarding the hydrogels, morphological, chemical, thermal, and mechanical characterizations were performed to understand the influence of the barbatim&atilde;o extract and the solvent on the fibroin hydrogel properties. As a result, the hydrogels containing the barbatim&atilde;o PG extract (BT/PG hydrogels) showed the better physical&ndash;chemical and structural performance. Therefore, these hydrogels should be further investigated regarding their potential in medical and pharmaceutical applications, especially in wound healing

    Schistosomiasis is one of the world`s greatly neglected tropical diseases, and its control is largely dependent on a single drug, praziquantel. Here, we report the in vitro effect of piplartine, an amide isolated from Piper tuberculatum (Piperaceae), on Schistosoma mansoni adult worms. A piplartine concentration of 15.8 mu M reduced the motor activity of worms and caused their death within 24 h in a RPMI 1640 medium. Similarly, the highest sub-lethal concentration of piplartine (6.3 mu M) caused a 75% reduction in egg production in spite of coupling. Additionally, piplartine induced morphological changes on the tegument, and a quantitative analysis carried out by confocal microscopy revealed an extensive tegumental destruction and damage in the tubercles. This damage was dose-dependent in the range of 15.8-630.2 mu M. At doses higher than 157.6 mu M, piplartine induced morphological changes in the oral and ventral sucker regions of the worms. It is the first time that the schistosomicidal activity has been reported for piplartine.     Most gluten-free bakery formulations have starch sources of low nutritional value. The objective of this work was to use fava beans (Phaseolus lunatus) for the production of gluten-free sponge cakes, in addition to evaluating the effects of the partial substitution of fava bean flour by galactomannan and xanthan gum, isolated or mixed at 0.5 and 1.0% proportions, compared with a commercial reference. The properties such as viscosity, specific gravity and microscopy of the air bubbles were evaluated in the raw cakes, while the cooked cakes were analyzed according to physicochemical (chemical composition, specific volume, texture and color) and sensorial properties. Hydrocolloids increased the viscosity, specific gravity, and incorporation of air into the batters. Xanthan gum increased the cakes firmness after cooking; in what concerns color parameters, hydrocolloids did not interfere. Cakes based on fava beans had better sensory acceptance with or without the presence of hydrocolloids and presented higher levels of moisture, proteins, lipids and ashes when compared to the commercial reference, proving to be an excellent food option without gluten and high nutritional value.The authors acknowledge the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) for the financial support.
